Mornington boat hire report
by Paul Pingiaro

Its time to grab the rods and bag that feed of fish for the annual Good Friday fish feast. The weeks around Easter can be fantastic for fishing. The weather is normally calm and the water warm. Anglers fishing this period do very well. Snapper, sharks, squid, whiting, garfish and salmon are regular occupiers of the fisherman creel. Venturing out into Bass Straight Mako, Blue and Gummy sharks are common along with large flathead and squid there is also a chance of a Tuna as well. Western Port Bay plays host to elephant fish, whiting, snapper and gummy sharks, while Port Phillip anglers encounter squid, flathead, whiting, snapper, salmon and gummy sharks. Those venturing out on the beaches for a spot of surf fishing are likely to bag salmon, sharks, mullet and flathead. The key to fishing this time of year is using burley. Most fish caught at this time are either entering or exiting their chosen feeding grounds so the are on the move. Burley helps you attract and keep these critters into your zone. The key to burley success is two fold, rule one is a little bit often and and rule two is to have a trace of the bait that your using in the burley. We all know what it's like smelling a steak on the BBQ only to be presented with salad, fish are the same.
This week it has been all about gummy sharks in Western Port. Locations like West Entrance, Cowes, Buoy 6 and 8 and Flinders Bank have been the place to fish. Best baits have been squid, tuna and salmon
This week anglers fishing from Mornington have landed squid, snapper, trevelly and garfish from the pier and snapper, whiting, trevelly, garfish, salmon, gummy shark, squid, cuttlefish and mackerel from the boats. The best times have been early morning and late afternoon. Best baits have been squid, mussels, pilchards and garfish.
Till next time tight lines and calm seas
